Instructions For Home-Inseminations:
Home-Inseminations are not complicated at all. Let's go over the basics.
The only type of insemination that is safe to do at home, is a vaginal insemination. I do not recommend that anyone try ICI or IUI at home! Those types of insemination are best left to a licensed physician, and could be dangerous or life threatening if attempted at home.
The first thing you are going to need before starting home-inseminations, is donor sperm. Donor sperm can be ordered through a couple of sperm banks that will ship directly to your home. Sperm banks do charge approximately $150.00-$250.00 per vial of cryropreserved sperm, plus shipping fees. You may also wish to locate a private donor either in your home town or through the internet. I will not make recommendations. But, I will offer all information that I know about, so that you can make a well informed decision of your own. You may want to see the Sperm Banks that deliver to your home or the Private Donors page to help you find a donor who fits the profile you have in mind.
Before you arrange for your sperm to be shipped, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Private donors do NOT have access to liquid nitrogen and therefore cannot send frozen sperm. Most private donors will be shipping fresh "chilled" sperm via a Bio Tranz kit, or a similar shipping kit. Fresh "chilled" sperm do NOT need to be unthawed. The sperm should NOT be frozen when you receive it. It should however be very cold.
Preparing the Fresh "Chilled" Sperm for Insemination:
Remove the vial containing the sperm from it's shipping container. Set the vial up right on the counter for about 2-3 minutes while you gather your syringe and ready your resting place.
Once you have your syringe, open the vial containing the sperm, and insert the end of the syringe into the vial opening and slowly draw back on the plunger to draw the sperm into the syringe. Be careful not to draw back too far, or the plunger will come out of the syringe and the semen will run back out the bottom! If the vial containing the sperm is too small to insert the tip of the syringe into, then get a small styrofoam cup and pour the semen into the cup, then use the syringe to draw up the sperm from the cup. If you are worried about missing some of the "swimmers", you may add a very tiny amount of saline to the cup then draw up the remaining with your syringe.
Once your syringe is "loaded", put your hand around it to warm it up a tad. You are now ready to do your insemination.
Find a comfortale place to take a nap. You also may want to grab a small cushion or pillow to put under your hips to give the spermies a slight downhill swim. Once you are comfortable with the pillow under your hips, insert the syringe as far as you can get it.(Note: Some of the syringes sold in the stores are NOT long enough, and the semen tends to want to leak back out. I suggest using a longer syringe. Slowly push in on the plunger to release the sperm as close to the cervix as you can. Do not push the plunger fast or it may cause the sperm to splash off of the cervix and leak out. Once you have emptied the syringe, lay it aside. Do NOT Get Up! This is sooo important! You need to lie still with your hips elevated on the pillow for at LEAST 30 minutes. Longer can be better!
Preparing Frozen (Cryropreserved) Sperm For Insemination:
Frozen sperm MUST be thawed before doing inseminations. Cryropreserved semen is extrememly COLD and it is not advised to handle the vials with bare hands. You will need a pair of gloves to retreive the vials from the shipping container. If you received your sperm in a liquid nitrogen container, you should receive instructions for retreiving your vials. Some sperm banks ship frozen sperm in dry ice. Which is also very cold and shouldn't be handled with your bare hands. Always use gloves when handling frozen sperm.
Once you have retreived your vials out of the tank or styrofoam cooler, put them in a cup of warm water for about 10 minutes. Turn the vials every few minutes so that the sperm will unthaw evenly. Do NOT put the vials into HOT water! You want the semen to unthaw slowly. Rapid unthawing may kill the sperm! Once the spermies are unthawed, you are ready to proceed. Click Here To Continue.
(RECOMMENDED HIGHLY) If you are using the Cervical Cup with Stem, follow these instructions:
Cervical Cup with Stem
To use the Cervical Cup with Stem correctly, you must know where the cervix is located. If
you do not know where your cervix is, follow these directions:
• Lay on your back. Separate the lips of your vagina and insert 2 fingers.
• As you reach the back of your vagina, you will feel a “dip” on the back
wall. This is the area where semen “pools” after intercourse.
• Your cervix is located just behind this “dip”. It should feel like the tip of
your nose.
How to insert the Cervical Cup with Stem:
1. Apply Pre-Seed Lubricant to vaginal area and outer sides of the Cervical Cup.
2. Pinch the sides of the Cervical Cup together.
3. Insert the cup into your vagina and place it over the cervix, making sure that the end of the
stem is outside the body.
4. Aspirate semen into the syringe from the test tube.
5. The white ball in the insemination cannula should be below the side hole.
6. Place the insemination cannula in the Cervical Cup stem through the side hole.
7. Insert the tip of the syringe into the insemination cannula.
8. Slowly inject the semen from the syringe into the cannula.
9. Remove the syringe and insemination cannula from the stem.
10. Use the tamper rod to push the white ball in the stem all the way to the top to prevent
spilling.
11. Fold the bottom of the stem up and tuck it into the plastic loop on the outside of the stem.
12. Leave the Cervical Cup in place for at least 6-8 hours or overnight.
13. When you a ready to remove the Cervical Cup, insert your finger into the vagina and
GENTLY pull the side of the Cervical Cup to break the seal.
14. Remove the Cervical Cup by GENTLY pulling on the stem.
15. Discard the Cervical Cup.
